Monet, Cézanne, Renoir and Other Stories of Painting in France
Republic of San Marino - Palazzo SUMS
October 23, 2010 - March 27, 2011
This exhibition, whose core is formed by paintings from the museums of Boston, Montpellier and Lille, is composed of thirty works, including several large canvases, that are linked with the important exhibition staged at Castel Sismondo in Rimini (“Paris: the Wonderful Years. Impressionism versus the Salon”). However, while it is its logical continuation, it independently recounts significant episodes in the art history of those “wonderful years” that made Paris and France the point of reference of a world unto itself. It is thus an exhibition that aims to take a closer look at this theme, and is built entirely around paintings chosen for their emblematic significance to the historical period.
The completely renovated Palazzo Sums in the old town of the Republic of San Marino opens its doors to the world’s greatest art, commencing with paintings by important masters from Corot to Courbet, Monet, Cézanne, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley and Degas, along with several painters of the Salon, in order to probe aspects of the French artistic scene that are only briefly touched upon by the Rimini exhibition.
This is what makes it such a significant event, one that is not simply a moving experience, but aims to offer greater insights into the period, like marvellous windows overlooking the decades that left their mark on art and taste in Europe, but also further afield.
